Shaken Hands is a love song that stems from a play on the word Cauterize, and how it sounds like “Caught her eyes.” Once you catch this woman’s eye, you are enslaved. The heart pumps blood, like a slave to the body. A broken heart or soul is an open wound bleeding, only she can seal the wound, burning it closed with her love. (Cauterize- an older medical method of burning a wound to stop blood flow and/or keep infection at bay.) “Green water wash my eyes today” hints at a beautiful ocean, washing clear your vision. The salt water may make your eyes tear, but it is worth it. A fresh start, a fresh love, a new heart and mind.
The lyrical break down bit about “Satan’s hand/glance “and the female, love is a gamble. It is about the boldness/bad-ass-bitch style of this attractive woman/love interest. These lines hinting that she may have sold her soul to the devil for something; or that she might actually be the devil and you’ve sold her your heart. But it doesn’t matter, my heart’s a slave since I caught her eye. Come shake my hand, you will understand why my heart waited for her. Again, hinting at the heart pulse and blood and love interest.
